apropos of nothing

God Complex

I used to have a wonderful doctor. Dr. Benway, we called her.

Dr. Benway was into efficiency, which is a quality I dig very much. You could call up anytime and say, "I have strep throat, call me in a prescription for antibiotics."

"Hey, Dr. Benway, I need more of my migraine pills."

"Dr. Benway, I have a UTI. Hook me up."

Dr. Benway never wanted me make an appointment, sit in her waiting room for an hour, and then chat with her for 10 minutes. If I said I had X and wanted Y to treat it, she was game for that. As long as I showed up for the annual exam and could accurately describe my symptoms, we could skip right to the prescription. Efficient.

Despite Dr. Benway's very agreeable nature, I never called and said, "Send me over some oxy and a month's worth of Xanax. I hear Ritalin is moving fast on the streets these days, so toss in some of that." I was always a responsible, if impatient, patient.

But she's gone, gone, gone. And my new doctor who I already dislike on the basis of her weird mispronunciations, always wants to see me and do the diagnosing herself before she forks over the prescription.

It's like someone forgot to tell her she's a glorified drug dealer, or something.
